It can't reasonably be called "Weekly Sherlock rec" any longer, can it? It's still all about Benedict Cumberbatch, though.

In case you don't know Cabin Pressure: it has Benedict Cumberbatch! )

In case you do know it, and feel like contributing to the Traveling Lemon (especially if you live somewhere starting with the letter Q, or, you know, outside of Europe), check this out: The Lemons and Landmarks Project . The deadline is June 4th.

And now for the actual point of my post: fic rec!

Title: The End of the World, via Tesco
Author: [info]r_scribbles
Summary: "Douz II - This time, there's Zombies!"
Rating: 15, for moderate gore & some swearing
Warnings: Well, it's the zombie apocalypse. So, warning for zombies & also apocalypse.
Author's notes: Prompt was for something with the whole cast, in which Arthur saves the day. In fact, I tried to make every one of the MJN Crew exhibit an unexpected emotional or mental strength under these extreme circumstances. I tried to make this Shaun of the Dead Meets Cabin Pressure - something blackly comic rather than completely bleak. Enjoy!

My comment: It's just as funny as to be expected from Cabin Pressure. Everyone is totally in character. It's exactly the kind of fic that Cabin Pressure deserves. I somehow can't ship anyone, especially Martin is horribly clueless in canon, so hilarious team fic it is.

I went to see the Avengers yesterday, with [info]neery, [info]t_eyla and [info]earlwyn.

And, surprisingly, it was not a total waste of time and money. :D

no plot spoilers, just character commentary and praise for Joss )

If I compare it to 'meaningful', non-comic movies, I would have to give it 3 out of 5 stars. But compared to other genre (or even Avenger) movies, it was really very good, so I'll go up to

4 out of 5 stars.

[info]astridv inspired me with her vid rec post.

Enjoy! Not embedding those, because pasting is easier when they're blocked anyway...

Chuck - Chuck/Sarah - Our kind of love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC-ugHGCT4M
Not recced for the music, but it has lots of Chuck dancing. Nice feel-good relationship vid.

Chuck - Chuck/Sarah - Ache: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s90HNbEmk20
"Have I told you i ache for you?" From seasons 1 and 2, when Chuck was still pining. Oh, the good old (painful) days.

Sherlock - John/Sherlock - You make me smile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-oNqW5L0EU
"You make me forget how to breathe" The happy feeling vid from my collection.

Sherlock - You light up my life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7EFeE8mljA
"You don't know you're beautiful" Just a snippet, but I like it because it fits BC just as well as it does Sherlock.

Sherlock - John/Sherlock - echo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISAThqi4gI4
Post-Reichenbach. "echo, echo, is the only voice coming back". I hate the lyrics placement smack in the middle of the images. Otherwise rocks, though.

Sherlock - John/Sherlock - my head & my heart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOdXDm7fV0g
My favorite Post-Reichenbach vid by far. "You can choose what stays and what fades away".
All her other videos are high quality, too: http://www.youtube.com/user/KatrinDepp/videos?query=sherlock

p.s.: most of those are blocked in Germany. :( Go here if you forgot how to fix this.

Another AU... I just love the epic ones.

Title: Stranger at the Gate on lj - on ao3
Author: [info]bendingsignpost
Pairing: Sherlock/John (Sherlock BBC)
Length: 85.190 (in 11 parts)
Warnings: Vampires, blood, explicit sex, glamour (as in mind control/hypnotism), dubcon. (and my personal favorite ao3 tag: "Sherlock lies like crazy")
Rating: NC-17
Author's summary: As far as initiation rites go, kidnapping a human doctor from a defended town ought to seem extreme. When James Moriarty offers him the challenge, Sherlock never considers saying no.
My summary and opinion: Sherlock is on a quest. But then he falls in love with John, and triggers his own sexual awakening and he starts growing up into an adult vampire. There is lots of pining and new experiences. As the story unfolds, the whole quest is slowly explained, along with a wonderfully complex world - with different languages, different countries and different vampire cultures. The longer it goes on, the more things change and the more Sherlock learns and is forced to adapt. But when Moriarty shows up, everything he thought he knew is suddenly in doubt.
A big part of the appeal of the story is Sherlock being unexperienced (and I don't mean just sexually) and thus unreliable as a narrator. His character develops a lot in the course of the story.

5 out of 5 stars from me.

Quote: John opens the door. “Good to see you,” the human says, a quick Franc greeting before he switches to Anglic. “I see no one’s killed you yet, well done.”

Sherlock’s smile is born of a quick reflex. A joke, of course. Merely that.

“Of course not, I had this,” he replies, offering John the return of his sheathed knife.

John reaches for it, then pauses. His hand hovers over the hilt the same way his eyes hover over Sherlock’s face. There’s something odd about this man. “Do you have one of your own yet?”

“Not as such, no.”

“Well, there’s no package today either, so you might want to hold onto that a bit longer.” John’s fingers wrap around the hilt, fingertips touching Sherlock’s hand, and the man pushes in a gentle guiding movement. It must be for emphasis: take this, keep it, stay safe. “Do you not eat meat?”

Sherlock’s face remains in its usual expression. “Why do you ask?”

“You don’t carry a knife,” John replies, as if this is an obvious connection. Of course it would be, for a human. Sherlock had thought to carry a drinking skin, but eating utensils are foreign in the extreme.

The new Aardman animated movie was sure to draw me to the theater.

Unfortunately, it doesn't hold a candle to Wallace and Gromit (or even Shawn the Sheep).

I'm not going to say much about it, let alone anything spoilery:

* the plot was suitable for children, nothing too fancy. It was occasionally hilarious, but nothing special overall.
* some scenes are needlessly and thoughtlessly violent, making the whole thing not so well suited for children after all - which means it was neither here nor there.
* Martin Freeman's voice was the one that was best recognizable of the lot - and I actually guessed Salma Hayek correctly. Yay! But I did not recognize Hugh Grant at all, even though I knew it, and I only read after the fact that David Tennant was in it, too. *shrug*

So that was that. Not really worth the price, especially since I hate 3D anyway.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

This is not a fic rec, but a music rec.

cucumberbatchin' writes amazing original piano music. She's also written hilarious covers of songs with Sherlock lyrics. E.g. a "Fix You" cover called "Skin You" or a hilarious "All I want for Christmas" cover with lines like this one:
"I won't blackmail for much this Christmas
I won't even sniff the snow
I'm just gonna keep on shooting
Holes into the mistletoe"

You can download all her songs from the master post through mediafire, and the lyrics are available on soundcloud. My favorite of hers is a piano piece about "Reichenbach Falls": soundcloud link.

Enjoy!

As always with season premieres, there's something special about them. Seeing all those characters again is simply exciting.

This time, I've read the book beforehand, so I know what's going to happen and I'm looking forward to the differences - the little changes, the big changes, and the visuals. The visuals are as gorgeous as expected.

tiny comments under the cut )

Wee, new season!
